A place to grow personally and professionally.  A place to develop life-long
friendships.  A place to train so that YOU can save others. A place where "the
leaders of tomorrow" can call home.
The Long Beach Search and Rescue unit is open to qualified young people in the Long Beach area
who wish to serve the public during emergency situations.  The unit is associated with the Long
Beach Police and Fire Departments.

Mission Statement

Through a program of community service, the mission of Long Beach Search & Rescue is to provide
young adults exposure to careers in public safety and opportunities to grow personally and
professionally.

Program

The Long Beach Search and Rescue program is planned and directed by members of the unit itself,
and advised by professional police officers and firefighters.  The programs include classes in first
aid and CPR, ropes and knots, ladders, rescue techniques, search patterns, traffic control, fire
prevention, fire suppression, and radio communication.
What Others Think of Long Beach Search and Rescue
"You men of the Search and Rescue Unit deserve every compliment and honor that could be
awarded!" - U.S. Civil Defense Council (1977)

"An outstanding example of the effectiveness of Post #279 was its performance in the aftermath of
the 1971 Sylmar Earthquake." [...] "During this emergency, the lighting services provided by Post
#279 proved to be far superior to those provided by the Los Angeles City Power and Lighting
Company; in the end, Post #279's lighting services were used almost exclusively during night rescue
work." - Western Fire Journal (July 1981)

"Mr. Speaker, I rise today to acknowledge and recognize the Long Beach Search and Rescue Post 279,
which was named the top rated explorer post in the country by the International Association of Fire
Chiefs." - Honorable Glenn Anderson, addressing the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Oct.
19, 1988)

"Long Beach Search and Rescue was recognized by the International Association of Fire Chiefs as
Fire Explorer Post of the Year in 1988. Search and Rescue has been recognized for community
service activities by the Boy Scouts of America, the Long Beach Fire Department, the Long Beach
Police Department, the mayor’s office, and many other organizations." - Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA)

"The hands-on experience, and preparation for future jobs in police and fire departments, is
invaluable, as is the amount of money the city (Long Beach) saves each year on the volunteer's free
hours." - Long Beach Press Telegram
