Trying Out
Whatever it is that you decide to do in life, you will most likely have to go through some type of
evaluation process before you are accepted.  This holds especially true if you are going to apply for a
police or fire department.  In Long Beach Search & Rescue, we attempt to give you a small taste of
what the process would be like by conducting a physical agility test and oral interview boards.  The
oral interview boards are what count for 90% of the determination about whether you will be accepted
into an academy or not.  The oral interview will ask questions evaluating your judgment, education,
experience, and appearance, among other areas.  The board will grade you based on your answers
and the scores will be used to determine acceptance into the academy.  The physical agility test
counts for about 10% of the determination, but should not be taken lightly.  Be sure to give it your all.
Some tips:
-Remain confident in both your stature and in the responses you give.
-Rehearse beforehand what you want to say about yourself so you do well when you go in.
-Speak clearly and with volume so that the board can easily hear your answers.
Physical Agility Events
Dummy Drag
The dummy drag consists of
pulling a dummy weighing in
excess of 80lbs around a set
of cones and back to the
start/finish line in a set time.
Remember to keep your
knees bent and your back
relatively straight.
Stair Climb
The stair climb consists of putting on a self contained
breathing apparatus (SCBA), turnout jacket, and a protective
helmet.  You will then run up two flights of stairs, making
sure to step on every step, and then coming back down,
again hitting every step.  A set time is required for
successful completion of this event.
Half Mile Run
You will be required to run a half mile over a measured
course in a set time.

Hose Pull
The hose pull consists of
pulling one hose a
distance so that the
opposite end of the hose
being pulled crosses a set
line.  You will then drop
that hose, run to another
hose and repeat the
process.  This event must
be completed in a set time
to pass.
Halyard Pull
The halyard pull consists of pulling a rolled hose up to the
top of a three story building utilizing a mechanical advantage
system, allowing the applicant to remain on the ground and
simply pull a rope that will in turn raise the hose up.  The
process requires moderate upper body and arm strength.
The process must be completed two times in a designated
time to pass.
